First established in 1979,
Wirreanda Nursery specialises in growing a wide
range high quality native and exotic plants suited to the
Sydney environment. As an accredited member
of the Nursery and Garden Industry, Wirreanda Nursery has won
several awards. We have supplied plants and given horticultural advice
to popular lifestyle programs such as 'Burkes Backyard',
'Backyard Blitz', 'Auction Squad' and 'Domestic Blitz'. Jamie Durie and his team
were here recently filming his show 'Australia's Best
Backyards'.
At
Wirreanda Nursery
▪
We aim to produce high quality Australian
native and Non-invasive exotic plants in an environmentally friendly way. Plants
that are suited to the local environment and require less water, fertilisers
and pesticides
▪
Our plants are grown outside so they are totally acclimatised and ready to plant in the home garden. These plants are
not transported by trucks to the nursery so we produce a smaller carbon
footprint than nurseries who buy in their plants
▪ We do not use any town water. We use bore water for irrigation and filtered rain water for drinking. We are not connected to the sewage, our toilet and sinks all pass through an envirocycle system.
The treated grey water is used to irrigate our garden.
▪ The pots we use for growing our plants are recycled when available. Our customers are welcome to bring back the pots they took their plants home in to be used again in the next batch. We also recycle all waste soil in various applications.
▪ We often supply
plants for local schools and community groups. Recently we
supplied 1000 native grow tubes for National Tree Day. We think it is important to promote tree planting to provide habitats for local fauna and
for the health of the planet.
▪ We prefer to grow plants that are pest and disease resistant
and rarely use pesticides. If we do, we choose the friendliest ones possible. We do not over fertilise
and 'force' grow our plants which only produces soft growth
vulnerable to pest attack Using the minimal amount of chemicals also prevents nutrient rich run off
going into our stormwater and bushland surrounds
